Phonics
We use Read, Write Inc (RWI) to develop phonics and reading in KS1. RWI is a method of learning centred around letter sounds and phonics focusing on pure sounds and segmenting and blending.
During the sessions the children are taught the pure sounds for all the phonemes, working progressively through Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds. We aim to support all children to become confident readers so create timely, small group intervention programmes for those who need it.
Read Write Inc Overview
When using RWI to read the children will:
- Learn 44 sounds and corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
- Learn to read real words using Fred Talk.
- Read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out.
- Show that they comprehend stories by answering and responding to questions.
Phonics Check
Pupils in Year 1 complete a statutory Phonics Screening Check in the Summer Term.
