Children's Council

Pupil leadership is a strength of the school with children taking on different roles across the school. Our Year 6 all have leadership roles for their final year, undertaking a range of possible positions based on their own strengths. This has included Head Boy/Girl, Team Captains, Sports Ambassadors and Playtime leaders.

Having had an Arts Council, School Council and Eco Gang over the years, we have now combined these to create a Children's Council. This is a group of children appointed following applications and interviews to represent views and needs of their peers in school matters, the arts, environment and local and global issues. Within the group we have an Arts Champion and Eco Champion to ensure that these areas maintain a high school focus.
Making a difference
The children have initiated many projects and changes over the years at Horningsham - introducing healthy snacks at break times, organising themed rotation days and developing creative play activities for playtimes.

We narrated this short animation for UNICEF about the rights of the child.
The children meet in class councils to raise ideas for Children's Council representatives to present at meetings. All ideas are considered; recognising that a small idea can lead to a big impact.

Helping Others
The children consistently support local and global charities, with annual contributions to the Foodbank, adoption of endangered species, fundraising for charities that are personal to us in our community (such as children and adult cancer support charities) and to support relief (such as Children in Need, Comic Relief, war in Ukraine, earthquake and flood disasters).
We are very proud of how proactive the children are in developing ideas and making things happen. It is wonderful to see them become such confident individuals leading assemblies and acting as ambassadors for the school with visitors and working with other schools.
